I used to have a hard time rolling out of bed in the morning. Even though I got to bed early, exercised regularly and was eating healthy, my energy levels were always low.
By the time I got to work I would need 2 or 3 cups of coffee before I could even think about getting started.
And when I finally did get into the swing of things I was unfocused, restless and couldn’t sit still for more than 20 mins.
However, now things are different. When I go to bed I am asleep within 10 minutes. And usually I am awake before my alarm ever goes off.
My mornings have become the most productive part of my day, I no longer “clock watch” and often I will work and realize, “wow 3 hours have gone by just like that”.
You see while I thought I was eating healthy, I had a flawed understanding of how our gut keeps us healthy.
And it was only when I began to address this foundational aspect of good health that everything started to change.
You see there is an intruder living within your gut that likes nothing more than to feast on french fries and butter.
And when he gets his way and you feed him what he wants he begins to multiply. And his ability to choose what you eat becomes stronger and stronger with every meal you feed him.
And this intruder is actual building an army of loyal junk food loving bacteria that cause you to crave more and more junk food. Causing a vicious cycle.
Within all of us there are certain microbes that feed off certain foods that you eat.
Some bacteria love healthy fruits and veggies, others love sugars and starch, and some just love pizza and deep fried ice cream.
And each of these groups of microbes perform certain functions that go beyond just digestion and weight gain.
For example, chemicals like serotonin, the chemical responsible for our sense of happiness and wellbeing. Are actually triggered when certain bacteria excrete these chemicals that are then sent up our central nervous system and are experienced by our brain.
If these microbes are not present in the gut, it doesn’t matter what you do, you will never be able to feel that sense of well being serotonin provides the brain.
Have you ever wondered why a country like the USA, the richest country on earth, with all its material comforts, consumes two thirds of all the world's antidepressants? The effects of a high processed diet impacts every area of your life, whether it be psychological, physical or even financial.
You see what we eat actually affects the bacteria that live inside us. And these bacteria affect everything from our moods and behaviours to the actions and decisions we take on a daily basis.
Remember we have 10 times more bacteria that reside in us, than we do normal human cells, and the foods we eat affect that bacteria. So those bacteria behave and adjust in accordance with the food we eat. And thus in turn affect the way we ultimately behave.
Consider the following:
And these are just a handful of the thousands of research papers coming out every year showing how our gut bacteria affect us in more ways than we ever could of imagined.
To truly ensure that you are operating at your most optimal state, it is not enough for you to consume just leafy greens and vegetables.
You need to address the imbalances of the gut and rebuild it from the ground up.
You need to understand the two types of foods you need to be consuming on a daily basis, so that you can build great long term health.
And because the microbiome that make up your gut bacteria are as unique to you as your fingerprints, we need to first understand what foods are good for your body type.
This way you know that your body and your gut is adequately prepared to handle any illness or disease.
